Proud Yanks
"Yank" is short for "Yankee." That's right. Yank. The word has a long complicated past pre-dating the Revolutionary War and remaining in use to present day. The important part is that during the revolutionary war period the British used "Yank" as a derisive expression to mock Americans who rebelled against the crown. Unfortunately for the British, Americans took the term and turned it into a term of endearment.
