The battle for intelligence was real in 1774 and the Whigs were steadily improving their game. The British had a highly efficient top down intelligence gathering approach while the Whigs took the exact opposite approach. The Whigs had different intelligence gathering groups scattered throughout New England like the Boston Committee of Correspondence, the Long Room Club, and the Sons of Liberty to name a few. Many Whigs were members of multiple groups and they shared information with each other. These groups were scattered, disorderly, and inefficient, but what they lacked in experience and organization they made up for with will, purpose, and relentlessness.
Paul Revere belonged to several of these groups and was the head of the North End Caucus that met in complete secrecy in the basement of The Green Dragon Tavern on Union Street in Boston. The group was comprised of approximately 30 "mechanics" who would watch and report the movements of the British soldiers. "Mechanics" were skilled laborers and artisans, such as blacksmiths, cordwainers, coopers, and stonemasons. They were uniquely positioned to monitor British movements all day because most had shops to watch from. They would also patrol the streets in pairs at night monitoring movements. They would then gather at The Green Dragon Tavern, swear on the Bible they would never tell about their meetings, and start unpacking the intelligence they gathered.
