In the beginning months of 1775, the Patriots were in a tough position. Patriot leaders knew from intelligence sources in Britain that the British were preparing to attack. The problem for the Patriots was they did not know where or when this attack would take place. Patriot leaders kept preparing as best they could and Samuel Adams was an integral part of this preparation. Adams made it very clear on a regular basis to Patriot leaders they could not attack first. If they did they would forfeit the moral advantage they currently had. Adams told Patriot leaders that the British must fire the first shot, and if they did Americans would unite. While speaking to Patriot leaders, Adams famously said, "Put your enemy in the wrong, and keep him so, is a wise maxim in politics, as well as war." Patriot leaders listened to Adams and took his words seriously, because when General Gage attacked, the Patriots were so prepared they hit back with everything they had and completely stunned the British. The British were not prepared for American ferocity, determination, and dedication.
