  • Who was Agent 355?  We may never know.  Agent 355 was a member of the Culper Spy Ring that was organized by Benjamin Tallmadge and General Washington, and reported directly to Washington.  The spy ring was created to provide Washington with intelligence on British operations in New York City and surrounding areas.

With the current knowledge we have of the spy ring there were approximately 14 people involved at different levels.  One of these people was a woman, and to this day is unknown to us and is only referenced as "Agent 355" in sophisticated coded documents the spy ring created.  Women were not considered threats at the time and this allowed Agent 355 to be a very valuable asset.  There is circumstantial evidence that Agent 355 is Anna Strong.

Anna Strong was married to Selah Strong who was related to Abraham Woodhull or "Samuel Culper," his code name.  None of the spies were known to Washington or Tallmadge by their real names.  Agent 355 is circumstantially linked to uncovering Benedict Arnold's treasonous acts.  It is also suspected that Agent 355 was used as a signaler for Woodhull when he had intelligence drops to be picked up.  Agent 355 got her name because in Tallmadge's code "355" is assigned to the word "lady."

There is only one specific reference to Agent 355 in the coded documents historians have discovered.  A message from Woodhull stated "I intend to visit 727 (New York) before long and think by the assistance of a 355 (lady) of my acquaintance, shall be able to out wit them all."

We may never determine the name of Agent 355 or the details of her involvement with the Cupler Spy Ring, but just knowing that she existed should set your imagination on fire.
